As I walked my kids to school, my kindergartener got excited over the “helicopter” seeds that had fallen from a tree. He tossed one up and watched it spin to the ground and my other two boys joined him.

After a few moments, I forced them on and they found some dandelion thistles to blow. The seeds went flying onto the street and sidewalk.

The obvious parallel of the parable of the sower and how some seeds fall on the road and get trampled came to mind (Matthew 13). But when I tried to discuss it with them, somehow the lesson became about how all creation points toward our creator.

I followed them around the corner. “Yes. God made us just like he made the plants, flowers, and trees. But we have more opportunity to impact than a tree.”

My boys nodded. “Sure. Sure, Mom.” They took off down the sidewalk in front of the school, but I couldn’t dismiss the thought as I walked back home with my three-year-old. Do we really have more reach than the soil in which God has planted us?

We’re like dew (Hosea 13:3), vapor (James 4:14), dust, flower, grass (1 Peter 1:24-25, Psalm 103:13-18). Here for a little while then gone. Cancer brings that home as does the death of friends and loved ones.

Could it be that we don’t get to choose if we are a majestic tree or a dandelion?

As Christians, we tend to become so concerned with doing enough and never feeling like we can (because we can’t earn the gift of salvation) that we forget to just be the flower in the garden we’re created to be. To do our best to spread seeds in the space we’re given and hope the wind carries it on.

We praise our creator by growing strong in His light. Our simple existence and growth offering praise in our blooming and testifying to Him as creator even during the harsh winters while we rest.

Dear God, today, please help us just be the flower or tree you created. Help us to relax and not worry about missing Your voice or failing. Instead, grow us strong in Your light. Give Your children peace and assurance that Your words in Philippians 1:6 are true. You are faithful to complete the good work You have started in us. In Jesus Name, Amen.
